August 27/28

No bell ringer today.  First, we filled out "About Me" papers.  Next had a candy review of the science process terms.  Then we completed a Jolly Rancher lab where students practiced taking Quantitative and Qualitative observations. Last of all we discussed what it means to be living.  Students had to write in their journals and tell me whether fire is alive or not and give reasons for their answer.  Last of all we discussed the characteristics of life and took notes (see below).
Characteristics of Life:
1.  Made of one or more cells
2.  Take in materials

  • oxygen, food, water etc.
3.  Get rid of waste

  • exhale carbon dioxide, plants release oxygen
4.  Grow
5.  Use energy

  • cellular respiration
6. Reproduce using genetic material
7. Respond to the environment

  • maintain homeostasis

Honors:  Don't forget to check out an insect net.  Insect collections will be due Oct. 2nd and your Habitat observations will be due Oct. 23.

Make up:  Arrange a time to make up the Jolly Rancher lab.  Copy the characteristics of life notes into your notebook.
