February 14 and 18 - Punnett Squares

  • What We Did
    • First we talked about the homework that was due. Many people forgot about it or filled it out incorrectly. That was partially due to poor instructions on my part. Because of this, we pushed the due date back to February 19 and 20
    • Then we did the bell ringer: “If tongue rolling is dominant and not being able to roll your tongue is recessive, what is the genotype of someone who is heterozygous for the trait?"
    • Then we took some time and played vocabulary games on quizlet. Se if you can beat the best score.
    • Then we did a bug lab where we took bags full of genotypes and figured out the phenotypes of the bugs. Then we made punnett squares for each of the traits to figure out what traits the kids could possibly have. Then we rolled dice to build a baby bug (1 = top left, 2 = top right, 3 = bottom left, 4 = bottom right, 5 and 6 mean you have to roll again). After we built some baby bugs, we used them to make dihybrid punnett squares.
  • Homework
    • Next Class: Family Trait Survey is DUE!
      • The Family trait survey requires students to pick a recessive trait (like attached earlobes, long big toe, red hair, blond hair, hitchhiker’s thumb, no chin cleft, straight hairline, non-tongue roller, straight little finger, or blond hair) and figure out who in their family has that trait. They need three generations of data. That means everyone’s names in one generation, everyone’s relationships, and whether or not everyone has a trait. It is going to be a big project so they need as many names as they can get. Grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins, siblings. Then they need a parent’s signature to show that they gathered the data.
      • Here’s the document you need to fill out to get credit: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B-czEsGD5_2aV1owNWxqcDVMUE0/edit?pli=1

  • Make Up
    • You need to come in to be sure you know how to use a punnett square and a dihybrid punnett square.
    • Don’t forget about the homework!
