April 12/13

Bell Ringer:  Choose an animal or plant and list 3 adaptations.
Today we began class by talking about adaptations and students gave several examples.  We discussed how the adaptations can be behavioral  (ex. hibernation, colonies) as well as structural (ex. fur color, thumbs).  Then we watched these 3 clips showing bird adaptations:  bird of paradise, bower bird, lyre bird.  Next, student participated in the bird beak lab.  Last of all we discussed:
Species:  group of organisms that are able to mate and produce offspring
Speciation:  formation of a new species
Geographic Isolation:  When organisms are separated from each other by a geographical barrier (ex. ocean, mountain range, canyon) and it could lead to speciation.
Reproductive Isolation:  When organisms are not able to reproduce with each other and it can lead to speciation.  (This can be a physical barrier, behavior, timing of maturity etc)
Last of all we had a candy review.
