January 15/16

Bell Ringer: Without looking at your notes write the equation for photosynthesis and then circle the reactants and underline the products.
First we reviewed the basics of photosynthesis and then we corrected the worksheet students completed the previous class period.  Next we watched this short clip on the scientists who helped us understand photosynthesis.  We took the following notes in our notebooks:

Van Helmont:  Showed that only a very small percentage of a plant's mass comes from the soil.
Priestly:  Conducted experiments using candles, mice, and plants.  Concluded that plants give off oxygen (only he didn't call it oxygen).
Ingenhousz:  Discovered that photosynthesis only takes place when there is light.
Other scientists:  Determined that carbon is the most abundant atom found in organic molecules so we were able to conclude that the majority of a plant's mass is gained from carbon dioxide.
Then we went over photosynthesis in detail partly using these notes and also using diagrams on the whiteboard.  Last of all students working in small groups using whiteboards to teach each other the steps of the light and dark reaction.
