Today we talked about the properties of water and we took notes:
Water:
- Polarity: the unequal sharing of electrons resulting in a slight charge.
- hydrogen bonds: polarity allows weak bond to form between water and other substances
- cohesion: water bonding to water
- adhesion: water bonding to other substances
- capillary action: because of adhesion and cohesion water is able to move against gravity in small spaces (allows blood to flow up a living organisms) (allows plants to transport water up)
- solvent: the polarity of water allows it to dissolve substances (gases, nutrients, hormones etc are able to be dissolved in our blood so they can be transported through our bodies.
- It takes a lot of energy to change the temperature of water (this allows us to maintain homeostasis with our body temperature. It takes us less energy to regulate our body temperature.
Next we talked about solutions and acids and bases. Here is a copy of the notes we used. Last of all we did a pH lab.
